Regular check-ups increase the chances of maintaining healthy teeth.

Health Insurance participates in the payment of children's dentistry up to their 18th birthday, as well as pensioners. Pensioners include the elderly, the disabled and individuals who receive a rehabilitation pension from the Social Insurance Administration (Tryggingastofnun).

The annual entry fee for kids under 18 years old can be found on island.is.

Health insurance pays 75% of general dental repairs for the elderly and disabled.

Others pay for dental expenses themselves, according to their dentist's tariff. A condition for co-payment is to have a registered family dentist. You can register a family dentist on island.is, but the dentist can also take care of the registration.

How often a person needs to visit the dentist for a check-up varies individually. It depends, among other things, on dietary habits, the condition of the teeth, dental hygiene, and genetics. The frequency of check-ups is determined in collaboration with a dentist. Some people need to visit every six months, while others may only need to go every two years. Pregnant women should have a dental check-up during pregnancy, as there is an increased risk of tooth decay and gingivitis during this time.

During regular check-ups, x-rays are often taken to detect early damage between the teeth and to assess the condition of the dentin. Tartar is usually removed, fluoride is applied, and the dentist provides advice if needed.

To book an appointment with a dentist, contact the dental clinic directly.
